UPDATE: Long and MMS Text Messages
Congregate now offers sending text messages over 150 characters in length and MMS support. See the information below for important details. 

Administrators with permission can use the message center within Congregate Admin to send email, text, and/or voice messages. Text and voice messages are premium features and must be added/enabled on your account.

Sending Email Messages

    1. Click “Send Email Message” under Communication > Message Center inside of Congregate Admin.
    2. Select who you want to send your message to: multiple members, all members except some members, an individual member, member group, or mailing list.
    3. Select and/or enter the name(s) of the member(s), member group(s), or mailing list.
    4. If you wish to receive a copy of the email, check “Email Myself a Copy.”
    5. Enter the subject of the email in the “Subject” field.
    6. Enter the content of your email in the “Message” field.
    7. If you wish to attach file(s), click the “Upload Files” button.
      Do Not Attach Large Files
      For maximized deliverability, attach combined files totaling 5mb or less. Some file types may not be supported for security/user protection.
    8. Click “Send Message” when you’re ready to send your message.

Sending Text Messages (Premium Feature)

    1. Click “Send Text Message” under Communication > Message Center inside of Congregate Admin.
    2. Select who you want to send your message to: multiple members, all members except some members, an individual member, or member group(s).
    3. Select and/or enter the name(s) of the member(s) or member group(s). Only members with cellular phone numbers in your directory will be listed.
    4. Enter the content of your text message in the “Message” field. While actual text messages are still 150 characters in length, Congregate will allow you to send longer messages by combining multiple messages together as one. While the content of multiple messages may be combined on recipients’ devices (so it appears as one longer, single message) the actual number of messages used to send your content will be deducted from your monthly allowance. For example, if you pay for 2,000 messages per month, you can send 2,000 messages of up to 150 characters each. However, if you wanted to send a message that was between 151-300 characters in length, you would only be able to send 1,000 messages (because your content would require two 150 character messages to send).In addition to the content length, any specially encoded characters included will increase the number of messages required to send (due to the added length of encoding the characters). Congregate has a built-in encoded character replacement tool that attempts to replace pasted content which may include specially encoded characters (e.g., the long dash “–” is a specially encoded character; Congregate will replace this with two normal dashes “–“). Note that this feature may not replace each and every specially encoded character, so while the length of your content may require a certain number of messages to send, any and all non-replaced specially encoded characters will add an additional number of messages to send.
    5. Pay close attention to the message counter to see how many messages will be required to send your content – which is based on content length and any specially encoded characters, then click “Send Message” when you’re ready to send your message.

Sending MMS Text Messages (Premium Feature)

    1. If MMS messaging is enabled on your account, you’ll compose a text message in the message center like usual, but you’ll see the addition of an “Upload File(s)” button.
    2. Click this button to upload file(s) to include in your text message. 
      Do Not Attach Large Files
      For deliverability, attach combined files totaling 600kb or less. Not all file types are supported over MMS.
    3. Click “Send Message” when you’re ready to send your message.

Sending Voice Messages (Premium Feature)

    1. Click “Send Voice Message” under Communication > Message Center inside of Congregate Admin.
    2. Select who you want to send your message to: multiple members, all members except some members, an individual member, or member group.
    3. Select and/or enter the name(s) of the member(s) or member group. Only members with telephone numbers in your directory will be listed.
    4. Enter the content of your voice message that will be read to your recipient using text-to-speech synthesis in the “Message” field.
      Call Length Limit
      Due to voice message length restrictions, your message must be under 500 characters in order to send.
    5. Click “Send Message” when you’re ready to send your message.
